Nearly forty years ago, my three year-old son called our high desert Colorado property, "Beauty Land." Donned in his Western hat and boots, he picked up sticks and rocks along the paths, seeking new discoveries.

I, too, am in childlike wonder of how sunlight falls on cliffs and mesas and brilliant sunsets backlight scrubby trees and cacti here in the Sonoran Desert. Wetland people see monotony in the desert, but I see vibrance and color. It IS Beauty Land.

I paint special places where I visited or lived, "en plein air," whenever possible. Working from memory and imagination frees me to capture the essence of how I felt when I experienced the view.
